Weekly Report 20/4/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:52 am

Earlier in the week boats got out and those who headed north got some spotted mackerel and a few Spanish off Grassy, with slimies starting to appear in bigger numbers. Snapper and trag were caught wider off Grassy up to Scotts. There were a few kingfish around Fish Rock taking livies, squid and jigs. Off the Jail for mixed bags of cobia, spotties and snapper, not big fish but a feed. Trolling lures from the Jail to Fish Rock for yellowfin and the odd longtail tuna.
The river is producing some nice flathead, you just need to move around for them. Whitebait on small ganged hooks, plastics and hardbodies are working well on these fish. If you get up river and fish the creeks on the tide changes you should hook one of these. Bream have been along the breakwalls along with some schoolies to 5kg taking softies. Whiting are still about on the shallow sand flats at Clybucca, Jerseyville and up to Smithtown on worms and pipis. GTs are starting to make an appearance, they’re good fun on light gear.
With the mullet season in full swing, now is the best time to get that big jewfish off the beach, rig one up and send it back out live. Tailor are also on Smoky Beach early in the morning but not in big numbers. With whiting, dart and bream coming in as well you should have a good day on the beach. Gap Beach has flathead and whiting while around the Boulders on Main Beach, big whiting have been caught on worms.
