Weekly Report 25/5/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 25, 2012 4:24 pm

A fantastic week of weather and calm conditions has drawn to a close. If you fished the bottom off the northern reefs you didn’t have much trouble filling your box with trag, some up around 6 kilo, good snapper and some big pearl perch. There were still one or two spotties caught off Grassy and the Jims Hole bait grounds earlier in the week. There were a few nice bar cod caught off the wider grounds in the calm conditions. The Dot has been producing morwong while there has been a good number of pigfish about. Kings are around Fish Rock but they are a hit and miss at the moment.
Good news and bad news out of the river; the system is loaded with bream but the bad news is you are battling to catch a legal (25cm) fish. There were some nice flathead landed through the week from the inlets around Clybucca and Stuarts Point and drifting the flats at Jerseyville has been productive. Upriver there are bass around Smithtown in good numbers but remember closed season on these fish starts June 1 to the end of August.
Smoky Beach has been fishing well for tailor and bream with the odd jewfish in the deeper holes towards Hat Head. Gap Beach has tailor, bream and some nice flathead. Rockhoppers are getting good tailor off the ledges with a few drummer and tarwhine.
