10/3/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 10, 2006 12:07 pm

Cobia were back in good numbers this week with fish up to 20kg caught off the Jail Grounds. Black Rock is also producing cobia in fair numbers. Out of the same location Ernie Lewis landed a 6.4 kilo Snapper. Grassy Head has been slow with no spotties to report, just a few reef fish like George Hills’ monster venus tusk fish and the odd snapper. There have been some mahi mahi about but not in any numbers and very quiet on the billfish front. Live bait is there but a little tougher to get.
Tailor are off the rock ledges hitting pilchards and garfish. Bream are a little tough to hook but the good news is that Bob Nips caught the first reported blackfish for the season, just under the kilo mark.
The beaches have been fair with some whiting coming in off Smoky, Gap and Back beaches along with good-size dart and the odd tailor.
The river is difficult to fish with a heap of weed coming down with the recent heavy rains. If you can get past this there are bream, flathead and a few whiting about. Good reports from the jew anglers with some nice ones coming in off the breakwalls towards the mouth of the river.
Check your safety gear and take care on the bars.
