Weekly Report 25/10/12

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:37 pm

I never thought I would be saying ‘a few days of rain would be good’ after the last couple of wet years. The Macleay River is crystal clear and needs just a little bit of colour to bring the fish on the bite. Flathead are in great numbers now with most caught on soft plastics and hardbodies. There has been the odd lizard on fish bait but they are jumping all over 4” to 5” plastics. One or two good bream have come in but fishing under the cover of darkness improves your chances.
Blue water fishos had some success off the closer grounds last week with trag and snapper in about 40m. Stronger currents to 2 knots and windy days made the wider grounds hard to fish but there were reports of cod and some nice pearlies in the deeper water. With the bay full of bait and the warmer water on its way it won’t be long before we see some pelagic action.
Rockhoppers have been into the odd drummer, a few bream, salmon and tailor.
On the beaches we had a few days of strong winds but in between whiting, salmon and a return of some dart were in fair numbers. Main Beach has had monster salmon busting up bream and whiting gear.
