17/3/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 17, 2006 8:26 am

It has been a little tough on the water over the last week with conditions being bumpy and a current around 4 knots down south.
There are some nice cobia coming out off the 30-metre mark from the Jail down to Black Rock. Late last week spotties were being caught off Grassy Head but they are very finicky at the moment. There have been a few reports of Spanish catches around the same area. There are still plenty off yellowfin around the 5 to 10 kilo mark in close. Fish Rock has kingfish as well as the odd snapper. No reports of any billfish last week out wide or in close. The slimies were more difficult to find last week but there are plenty of yakkas and bonito.
You will need to put some hours in if you want to catch a keeper out of the river. It has been very slow apart from a few bream and flathead and some fair whiting further up river.
Rockhoppers are getting fish at the moment with tailor, bream and trevally coming in with bigger tailor down off the Hat Head ledges.
If you fish the beaches all you will be catching is the view, let’s hope it improves once the north-east winds change.
Check your safety gear and take care on the Bars
