Weekly Report 1/2/13

I did say last week a small fresh might put the fish on the bite. Sorry about that, we got inundated but still, it could have been worse. Just prior to the big seas we had reports of wahoo in front of the jail with one or two marlin hook-ups. Spotties up off Grassy were in good numbers with a few Spanish in the mix. Hopefully they will be still around when the good water returns.
The river is brown, as expected, but there are fish coming out of it. Flathead have been caught in front of the tavern and around the boatshed while bream are along the breakwall but it is hard to fish with the run. Just before the fresh Andrew Cobb from Coffs Harbour caught a 6kg flathead out of Back Creek on a live mullet and after a photo, the big mama was released.
A lot of fishos love these dirty conditions because if there are any jewfish about they are active in the dirty water. Along the breakwall towards the mouth is the place to go. Try a big rattling lure like a Killalure or the Berkley Frenzy to entice these fish.
The swell on Smoky Beach has been big but after it settles the beaches will be the best shot for a feed of fish.
