Report 7/5/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon May 09, 2016 4:59 pm

After a slow start to the week on the water South West Rocks fired up with another full on run of Mackerel. Spotties and Spanish were in good numbers off the Gaol Grounds and up off grassy Head. With the warm water still here who knows how long this will last. There were a few classic Wahoo caught through the week with the best reported a cracker 32 kilo. The odd Long tail and Yellow fin Tuna have been boated from the grounds down South while the Kings are not playing the game around Fish Rock. Heading north, Grassy Middle Grounds are producing Snapper and Pearl Perch. Through the week one of our Charter Boats along with a heap of Spotties caught Snapper with one Red going 5 kilo. There were no reports from the wider grounds of any Cod or Marlin but The FAD had a heap of Dolphin Fish around it with some good fish amongst them. Live Bait are still in good numbers around the bait grounds.

Fishing the river has been a hit or miss thing but not for local Ian Black who is still on a high with his classic South West Rocks Break Wall Jew fish going around 30 kilo pictured with some of our local young fisho's.

The incoming tide has been bringing in King Fish hugging the South Wall going as far up as the Boat Ramp chasing all the bait fish. They have been tough to catch but they will take a popper or a fresh bait. Bream are in good numbers along the walls taking all sorts of Baits. Flathead are on the bite up river around Jerseyville with a few Jews around the pylons of the Bridge. Whiting have been harder to find, sometimes this time of the year you can get them way up river to Smithtown.

Fishing the beaches here at the moment while the Mullet netters are here can be tough, Front Beach I would give a miss and try Back Beach where there has been the odd Flathead and Whiting. Smoky Beach has a few Dart and Flathead coming in but the netters are working all the way down to Hat Head.

Take care on our bar crossings
