Report 4/2/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Feb 06, 2017 9:04 am

After a busy Christmas holiday period things are settling in now for a good pelagic summer season. We are still battling with the North Easterlies but when there is a break fisho’s heading out are going ok. Spotted Mackerel are there in big numbers but its whether they want to bite or not is the thing. Last week end they were jumping in the boat, through the week they were a little more timid. Friday gave us oil slick conditions and while you had to work for your Spotties the odd Spanish and Cobia were caught off the grounds at Grassy Head. Fair numbers of Marlin are about with reports of Blacks and Strips in fairly close from Scotts down to Hat Head. Over the last few days Slimies have been hard to get which is tough when the Mackerel aren’t interested in Pilchards. Kings are around Fish Rock with some nice fish reported. Snapper are on the small side but are up off the northern reefs with Pearlies and the odd Tusky. Out at the FAD big Dolphin Fish are on the bite especially for the early fisho’s. Heading south, Bonito and Mac Tuna are in close with Cobia, Spanish and Marlin down towards Hat Head.
The river has been producing some big Flathead but we could do with a little colour in the water to really make them fire up. Fork Tail Catfish are all over the river and there are some monsters amongst them. These fish eat alright and well worth a try. Bream are in numbers along the walls with Moses Perch and the odd Mangrove Jack reported this week. There were plenty of Herring in their usual haunts for fresh bait.
Whiting are on Smoky and Gap Beach with Dart taking Worms and Pippis. While off the ledges Small Kings have been caught from the Jail to the Lighthouse.

Why not do weekly reports so we know what's going on up there?

Hi Buck, it depends on how busy the reporter is. Our paid magazine writers are always required to submit their magazine reports on time, but these smaller online reporters are just volunteers providing a free service. Because they're doing this for free, we don't hound them about deadlines; they just do it when they have time to spare.
