14/7/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:55 am

It has been a good week on the water with some surprising catches. Smoky Beach is starting to fire up with some good catches of bream, mostly legal. There have been a few tailor early in the day and, amazingly, the odd whiting. Gap Breach should give up tailor and salmon. Back Beach is quiet and Front Beach towards the jail has small whiting.
Good jewfish are about in the river with the breakwall the hot spot if you are land-based. Once again live bait is tough to find with mullet the easiest to pick up. Blackfish have been on the bite in fair numbers but they are very good fish to make up for the quantity. Bream are available just about everywhere and taking most baits.
Leatherjackets have quietened down for the moment with pearl perch coming in good numbers up north in close and out wider. Early last week there were reports of longtails and yellowfin about. Matt Bennett and his crew were out wide off Nambucca and hooked a 200kg blue marlin, giving his TLD 25 a huge workout. They got it to the boat with the line breaking at the two-hook rig. The best thing about the Mid North Coast, you never know what you are going to hook up to.
