13//9/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Wed Sep 13, 2006 1:39 pm

In the estuary, the breakwalls continue to fish exceptionally well for blackfish with plenty of fish to a kilo taking weed and cabbage. Flathead continue to improve with terrific numbers of fish beginning to show up in most locations, with bait and lures working well. Good fish have been taken from Limeburners, Settlement Point, Blackmans Point, Rawdon Island and basically anywhere in between. Some nice whiting are beginning to show up at several locations downstream of the Dennis Bridge with live worms and yabbies by far the best baits. Bream numbers remain quite good and the recent small fresh will no doubt assist those fishing the lower reaches.
On the beaches, there were terrific formations developing but I expect most to have significantly changed or disappeared following the recent big seas. Before the seas came up some nice bream to around a kilo were taken from Lighthouse and North Beach, although generally not in big numbers. The lead-up to the moon also produced a few school mulloway from Lighthouse and Lake Cathie but the crook weather came just at the wrong time. Tailor remain rare but what fish are still about are of exceptional quality. Salmon slabs have proven quite effective for big tailor and have also accounted for a few mulloway of late. Guess they have to be good for something!
Off the rocks, drummer reports continue to be quite good with most anglers continuing to manage a fish or two each outing. Point Plomer and surrounds continue the pick location but Miners has had a few solid pigs over the past week. Tailor numbers continue to be inconsistent at best, although the quality remains excellent. Early morning and evening bream sessions in the protected holes have proven productive despite the recent full moon.
