In the estuaries, flathead and whiting continue to be the dominant species, with fish virtually all throughout the Hastings. Best baits for the lizards continue to be whitebait and prawns but whole pilchards and mullet strips have accounted for good fish around the breakwalls. Lure-tossers have also been enjoying a great deal of success spinning the sand flats around Pelican Island and up the Maria and Limeburners. On the whiting front, Limeburners, the Back Channel, Blackmans Point and well up the Maria are all worth a look with live worms or yabbies. A few solid bream are around the breakwalls however early mornings and evenings. Blackfish remain patchy at best with a few solid fish to around a kilo on the South Wall on cabbage.
On the beaches, the warmer water temperature at last seems to have moved the bulk of the salmon back down south. Unfortunately the currents have not shifted the red weed, which remains on most beaches. Despite this there have been some reasonable fish about, with Lighthouse producing solid bream and whiting. Beaches to the south have also produced improved numbers of tailor with the dawn session the go.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers are improving however most fish are just choppers. Bream have begun to pick up following the full moon while those chasing blackfish on cabbage have been reporting above average catches. No news of pelagics but the warmer currents are moving south and closer to the coast.
Offshore, things are looking up with warmer water beginning to filter down although the unpredictable currents have been making life difficult. No real pelagic action as yet but bottom-bouncing has produced some nice reds and a few small to medium kingfish. Plenty of solid flatties to around 60cm have been on offer from around the 55m mark straight off the.
