Weekly Report 8/10/08

Post by Tony Zann » Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:04 am

In the estuary, flathead are picking up noticeably, with good fish on offer from most parts. The lower part of the Maria and around Rawdon Island are fishing quite well, although around Pelican Island and the Coal Wall are also producing some solid lizards. A few bream are still on offer around Limeburners and the Coal Wall, although those doing preliminary lure investigations for the upcoming BREAM Classic have found the going a little more challenging than they would like. Increasing numbers of whiting are also beginning to show in the Hastings with Limeburners and around Blackmans Point producing some nice fish on live worms or yabbies. Blackfish are starting to slow considerably but a few solid fish to a kilo are hanging around Limeburners and the breakwalls.
Off the beaches, results have been down noticeably, no doubt due to the terrible water colour and a cold current of 16° to 17°. There seems to be a very fine brown algae of some sort which blew in with the big nor’-easters last week. Let’s hope this algae is not a precursor to more serious problems usually blown in with big onshore winds. Those who have hit the sand report a few bream and whiting from North Beach, along with salmon, of course.
Off the rocks, the poor water colour is not doing any favours, with tailor very scarce. A few bream are on offer although the average size and condition has begun to diminish. Blackfish numbers remain reasonable, while the odd drummer and groper are still on offer, with Diamond Head and Point Perpendicular the pick locations.
Outside reports have been encouraging with snapper numbers solid from the closer reefs, a few kingfish and samson wider off Point Plomer and still a few yellowfin on the shelf. Also a few mahi mahi hanging around, which encouraging given the FAD should be back in place very soon.
