Weekly Report 15/10/08

In the estuary, flathead remain the star attraction with some quality fish on offer from most parts. The better catches have been from areas upstream, with the Maria and around Rawdon Island fishing quite well. Lures and baits have been equally effective. Whiting increasing, particularly around Big Bay and the back channel on live worms and yabbies. Don’t forget how receptive these fish are to lures, most notably surface poppers and blades. A few bream around Rawdon Island during the day and around the breakwalls at night, although results have been below expectations. Many of those competing in the upcoming BREAM Classic are glad the pre-fish ban is now in place, as their recent investigations have produced more frustrations than secrets.
Off the beaches, salmon dominate. This species is the only one whose activity does not diminish when cold currents hug the coast. A few bream from North Beach and Lighthouse, whilst Lighthouse and around Lake Cathie has begun to produce a few better whiting. Mulloway and tailor remain most disappointing.
Off the rocks, still a few drummer but action has begun to slow. Tailor have improved a little with some reasonable fish to a kilo from most headlands. A few bream and they should improve once the full moon wanes. Blackfish numbers remain reasonable, whilst the odd groper is still on offer around Diamond Head and Point Perpendicular.
Outside reports have been quiet, although most bottom bashers have been managing a reasonable feed. The wider reefs off Plomer have a few reasonable snapper, pearl perch and kingfish although the odd patch of small leatherjackets remains active. Flathead numbers and quality around 55m to 60m mark straight off the Port bar are as good as anyone can recall. The NSW Fisheries FAD is back, GPS co-ordinates 31°.24.567S 153°.04.725E, pretty well where is has been for the last couple of years.
