Weekly Report 13/2/09

Lighthouse Beach has been yielding a consistent run of tailor, mainly from the Lake Cathie end. Most fish have been just choppers with the odd better fish after dark. Bream and whiting however have been down, with the water a frigid 17°. When this cold water moves on, look for a significant improvement. Mulloway results remain poor but we have heard the odd rumour of a few schoolies not too far south. Large quantities of red weed are not too far north. Fingers crossed the southerly change will assist in keeping the weed away at least for the short term.
Reasonable numbers of bream have been taken off the rocks on mullet or tailor strips with Point Plomer and Lighthouse fishing quite well, particularly at night in the lead-up to the full moon. Tailor numbers remain above average, with Point Plomer continuing to produce. A few solid blackfish at Point Perpendicular and Miners. No LBG activity in the cold water.
Estuary flathead numbers have picked up again and blackfish and bream have been better than expected. Whiting remain excellent with Limeburners and the Maria continuing to produce, although Back Channel should not be overlooked. Lake Cathie has been producing a sensational run of flathead on lures and live prawns. Some fish are feeding exceptionally well, and others suffering from whatever caused the recent fish kill. It will also be interesting to see how this current prawn dark goes bearing these recent events in mind.
Outside results continue to be varied with terrific action some days and rather poor results on others. The cold, green water is a significant factor. Pelagics have been quiet unless you are prepared to travel extremely wide in search of warmer currents. Bottom-bashers have been enjoying great pearl perch, kingfish and samson off Plomer with the odd longfin perch.
