Weekly Report 8/4/09

In the estuaries, mulloway have been consistent from the breakwalls, as is often the case after a decent fresh. There have been more school-size fish than we generally see. While Mick Winchester managed a top fish of 22kg from the North Wall, there have been plenty of fish between 4kg and 10kg, all on hardbodies lures aimed a much larger models. The breakwalls have also been producing some nice bream and a few blackfish, together with the odd flattie. Further upstream, a few bumper whiting are still on offer despite the dirty water and should further improve once the clean ocean water pushes further inland. My spies tell me the muddies are on the move, so now would be a great time to get the traps in.
Off the beaches, the big seas have seen a significant amount of sand removed from most locations. Despite this, coming weeks should provide plenty of opportunity with bream, tailor and mulloway. Remember, you do not need a significant amount of formation to attract and hold fish. For those contemplating driving the beaches this Easter weekend, be mindful of the amount of sand missing and possible problems at high tide.
Off the rocks, tailor remain solid with Point Plomer continuing to be the pick of locations. Bream numbers are up although the better catches have been taken during the morning sessions. Blackfish remain excellent with good numbers taken from around Miners and Shelleys. Shelleys was particularly good during the worst of the rough seas. We have also had a few early season reports of drummer, with Diamond Head and Bonny Hills rumored to be producing a few solid pigs. The rough seas and dirty water have not helped what has been a relatively poor LBG season.
Little to report offshore courtesy of the weather.
