Weekly Report 30/10/09

On the beaches, the lower end of Lighthouse has a few bream and salmon, along with increasing numbers of whiting. North Beach continues to produce the odd salmon, along with a steady supply of school mulloway on the evening tides. The beaches around Lake Cathie have also been producing school mulloway to around 6 kilos. Still no signs of consistent tailor action, although there have been a few large bait schools hugging the coast.
In the estuary, flathead remain excellent from all points of the system between Wauchope and the breakwalls. Lures and whitebait have been achieving good results. A few nice bream around the coal wall after dark, whilst those throwing lures further upstream report increased action on surface lures. We are seeing a steady whiting improvement, with Big Bay and Blackmans Point worth a look with yabbies or beach worms. The shallower weed beds are still holding some quality blackfish for those throwing lightly weighted yabbies. Those fishing the deeper water with green weed are achieving only average results.
Off the rocks, not a lot to report. Best bet if you are keen is head to Plomer or the Lighthouse at daylight for a few chopper tailor or south to Camden Haven or Diamond Head for a few late pigs..
Offshore results have been quite encouraging, with the recent influx of 20°-plus water certainly helping. Snapper numbers and quality have been solid close in off Lighthouse and Plomer, with baits and plastics working well. Wider out, pearl perch numbers remain excellent, although we are seeing increasing numbers of fish just under or on legal size. There are still a few solid kingfish and samson fish around Trag Rock taking livies and jigs. We have a few whispers of mahi mahi already hanging around the NSW Fisheries FAD.
