Weekly Report 18/12/09

In the estuary, flathead and whiting have been excellent. Best results on the lizards between Rawdon Island and Pelican Island, with whitebait, prawns and lures of all types successful. For the whiting, Limeburners and the Back Channel have been consistent, with beach worms and yabbies the pick baits. Surface lures have also accounted for some quality fish. A few bream have been taken from around the walls and co-op while the Maria and Limeburners continue to produce scattered catches of blackfish.
Lake Cathie has been a little hit and miss for prawns this moon, with some nights seeing easy bag limits (unfortunately exceeded) while others have been quite barren. Overall results are solid if you are prepared to put in the time and effort.
On the beaches, whiting numbers continue to improve, with Lighthouse in particular fishing well on the run-up tide. Reasonable numbers of bream, with beach worms accounting for the better catches. A few school mulloway have also been snared after dark, with the beaches around Lake Cathie and Dunbogan producing better quality fish. Tailor remain poor although there are still a few salmon around to make sure your pilchard does not go to waste.
Off the rocks, the occasional tailor has shown up with Lighthouse and Blueface producing the odd reasonable catch. Night anglers have also been scoring a few reasonable bream and school mulloway from around Plomer, while those floating a bit of cabbage during the day from the same location report the odd blackfish.
Offshore reports have been encouraging for bottom bouncing with the odd snapper to 5kg from the close reefs off Port and Plomer. Wider off Plomer, kingfish and samson are still active although there is a fair sprinkling of juveniles among the better fish. Those fishing the bottom deeper than about 60m report excellent pearl perch if you can find them.
