Weekly Report 8/1/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:57 pm

The buzz is on the Golden Lure, with 2010 shaping up as another great game tournament. Whilst the real warm water is still much wider than we would like, a few billfish have been raised and sharks encountered over the past week, together with the odd mahi mahi. The NSW Fisheries FAD has begun to attract a few fish after being recently replaced, however there are a lot of juveniles in between the better fish.
Bottom bashers have been scoring some great feeds, with a few solid snapper to 5kg on the reefs off Lake Cathie and Plomer. Lure enthusiasts have been accounting for the majority of the better fish, but squid and pilchards have also produced well. Pearl perch and morwong numbers are excellent as are flathead, while the odd teraglin was taken around the recent full moon. There are still plenty of small to medium kingfish and some solid samson in around 60m to 80m off Lighthouse and Plomer.
Off the beaches, best results have been on the evening high tides, with school mulloway and salmon common. Stingrays are becoming a real nuisance for those using worms during the darker hours. During the day, a few reasonable bream from Lighthouse along with a steady stream of whiting. Still no signs of any consistent tailor activity.
In the estuary, recent big tides have finally begun to send some clean water back into the system after the fresh at Christmas. We should see the estuary angling really pick up over the next week or so. Best bets would be whiting on worms, yabbies or poppers, or flatties on lures or whitebait. The last of the run in and first part of the run out tide should produce well. We are now entering another prawning dark, so hopefully Lake Cathie will fire. I expect a high level of participation irrespective, based on results thus far this season.
Off the rocks, few reports apart from the occasional nice tailor, a few bream and school mulloway.
