Weekly Report 12/3/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:54 pm

On the beaches, tailor remain common on most stretches, which is something I cannot recall saying for quite some time. Best results have been from the bottom end of Lighthouse and beaches in the Camden Haven, with pillies, whitebait and small lures enjoying success. While the trophy mulloway remain elusive, schoolies are common with the average size steadily increasing. There are still plenty of fish which NSW Fisheries declare legal but are morally undersize, but we are seeing a gradual improvement in numbers of fish in the 70cm-plus bracket. Bream and whiting results remain below par although there is the odd good bream around if you are prepared to put in the time.
Off the rocks, reasonable numbers of blackfish are on offer with many locations quite well washed out for this time of year. Tailor remain excellent for this time of year, with the morning sessions better. Bream remain reasonable around Lighthouse and Miners and will be well worth a look just after dark with good high tides and no moon. Little to report from a land based game scene.
In the estuary, blackfish numbers have improved marginally although they are nowhere near as common as the diehards expect. Flathead numbers remain reasonable with the breakwalls, Limeburners and around Rawdon Island providing some nice lizards. Bream have picked up with the better catches during the evening. Whiting remain poor. Blue swimmers remain most disappointing but the muddies have been thick.
Outside reports have been a little mixed with rough seas and wind on some days and plenty of current on others. The odd good snapper and pearl perch along with plenty of good flatties. The odd cobia and even a wahoo in and just outside Barries Bay. Wider out, billfish and mahi mahi remain viable.
