Weekly Report 1/4/10

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Apr 01, 2010 11:52 am

The best news has been the amount of tailor on offer over the past few weeks, with many quality bags taken from most beaches throughout the area. Best results from evening sessions although mornings have been quite productive. Pilchards and lures have proven equally successful. Quite a few salmon are already about. A few reasonable bream beginning to get about, but whiting continue to disappoint. School mulloway remain common from most beaches, but the better models are yet to turn up in reasonable numbers.
Off the rocks, tailor and bonito are common, with Lighthouse producing some solid bags, while Point Plomer has some better fish. Blackfish numbers are solid, with several quality fish taken. Land based game results remain below expectations.
In the estuary, blackfish have been improving off the South Wall. A few solid bream have begun to show up around the walls, with the best of action during the day. Limeburners and Settlement Point have produced pleasing results as well. Flathead numbers remain consistent, as have whiting, with the Maria quite productive despite remaining dirty. Plenty of mullet moving into the lower reaches, with their annual seaward migration now not far off. If a decent mulloway is what you desire, floating a livie or throwing big lures where the mullet are congregating will not do your chances any harm at all.
Offshore reports have been limited but the current has slowed and the water close in has cooled somewhat. Pelagic action has slowed, although with the amount of mackerel and cobia just north of town, Barries Bay should be well worth investigating once the southerlies bring the warm water back in. In the meantime, bottom bouncing should prove rewarding with some nice snapper, trag and pearl perch all on offer.
