Weekly Report 13/5/10

In the estuary, flathead numbers and quality remain solid, with most locations in the lower reaches producing well. Blackfish are a little patchy although by all reports, the estuary is loaded with fish. Once these fish begin to feed more consistently, catches should be excellent. A similar story on the bream front, with a few reasonable fish here and there, but the influx of quality fish has yet to eventuate. Some nice late season whiting from around Big Bay and Blackmans Point, with live worms or yabbies doing the trick. Those who have ventured into the drink at lake Cathie have generally been well rewarded with prawns. The quality is exceptional. I would not be surprised to see next month produce well again, although a combination of bravado and strong liquor may well be needed as the mercury is sure to be significantly below pleasant.
Off the beaches, tailor remain reasonable with the southern end of Lighthouse and the beaches around Laurieton more consistent. The top half of North Beach and Lake Cathie are both well worth a look for school mulloway. The northern section of Lighthouse has been producing whiting on worms. We are yet to see any numbers of mnigrating bream.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers remain solid, with Lighthouse, Bonny Hills and Plomer producing the odd good haul. Bonito numbers have dwindled although this year’s run has been the best for many years. Bream numbers are slowly improving, as are blackfish with Miners worth a look. A few whispers of the odd drummer from Point Plomer and Diamond Head. Still the odd longtail tuna around, although the effort has increased to get one.
