Weekly Report 5/11/10

In the estuaries, flathead remain excellent throughout the Hastings. Best results have been around Limeburners and the Dennis Bridge and the Maria has also produced good fish. Whiting numbers continue to improve with bait and surface lure effective. Blackmans Point, up the Maria and the Back Channel are all well worth a go. A few muddies have reappeared following the fresh although there has been no sign of blue swimmers. The prawning season is well under way at Lake Cathie but results have not been spectacular.
On the beaches, school mulloway remain prolific and the average size is improving with plenty of fish now around 70cm. Be mindful you are allowed to keep only 2 fish in excess of 70cm. A few tailor during dawn sessions along with the odd bream. Whiting a little quiet but plenty of salmon day or night.
Off the rocks, night anglers continue to pick up a few reasonable bream and school mulloway with Big Hill and Racecourse both producing. The odd pig and blackfish but the constant nor’-easters have seen many of the better ledges begin to sand up.
Offshore conditions have been frustrating with the unsettled winds meaning limited opportunities to head out. Those who managed report terrific snapper off Plomer and Lighthouse, with an improved showing of pearl perch. A bit wider are kingfish and samson on livies and jigs.
