Weekly Report 18/11/10

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Nov 18, 2010 3:27 pm

In the estuary, whiting numbers have picked up noticeably as the estuary clears following the fresh. Best results have come from Limeburners and around Pelican Island, with lures and bait effective. Look for a big improvement around Blackmans Point and up the Maria over the coming weeks, particularly if we receive no more rain. Flathead remain excellent in pretty well all parts of the system with the Hibbard area good for those with boats, and land-based anglers around Settlement Point and off the Coal Wall enjoying success. The breakwalls are producing a few bream mostly at first light, although lure enthusiasts seem to be enjoying a gradual improvement, particularly on surface lures. This weekend should prove ideal for mulloway, with live mullet fished around high tide at any deep point in the lower reaches ideal.
On the beaches, there are some nice fish about but the strong north-south run has made conditions difficult. On Lighthouse evening sessions are producing mulloway in varying sizes, as well as some nice bream and a few salmon. With high tides just after dark and the full moon approaching, a schoolie or a larger model could well be on the cards. Whiting are on the improve and we have had a few reports of good flathead on North Beach. Use similar tactics to the estuary; keep your bait moving, look for drop-offs and small gutters and focus attention within a kilometre or so of the breakwalls with whitebait, mullet strips, yabbies, prawns and soft plastics.
Off the rocks, little to report apart from the odd early morning tailor. Most rock fisho's have given the stones a rest until the big nor-easters settle. Can't say I blame them.
Offshore opportunities have been minimal courtesy of the winds, with only the occasional early morning session possible. Those who have got out report excellent pearl perch, including quite a few bag limit catches. Those chasing kingfish are still doing well, with samson fish and some above average teraglin.
