Weekly Report 26/11/10

In the estuaries, the recent fresh is beginning to clear and the angling is picking up. Flathead continue the best bet with the Hastings and tributaries producing good bags of quality fish. Best catches this week have come from between the Dennis bridge and Settlement Point on baits and lures. A few bream have been encountered while whiting continue to improve in quantity and quality.
It will be interesting to see how Lake Cathie prawning performs this coming dark. Last moon there were only moderate catches although the quality was exceptional.
On the beaches, the recent full moon had the desired effect on the local mulloway with terrific fishing from most locations. The average size of the schoolies is up again, while the odd better fish was also encountered. Nick Byczkov and Paul Davis both managed fish of 17.2kg from Dunbogan and Lighthouse beaches. Salmon numbers are still solid while the odd solid tailor was taken on lures and pillies. Lighthouse is still producing the odd reasonable bream for daytime anglers while whiting numbers seem to be slowly improving.
Off the rocks, early morning and late afternoon sessions have yielded a few tailor. A few nice blackfish have been around Shelley and Lighthouse but a bit of rough water is a must. The next few weeks may also be well worth a throw for a late season drummer, as the odd cool pocket of water is still hanging about.
Offshore, good news for game fishos with some nice 24° water moving in to The Ridge. A few marlin were raised last weekend with at least one 100kg-plus blue tagged and released. Mahi mahi between 8kg and 14g were also encountered. Hopefully the FAD will soon hold improved numbers. Kingfish remain excellent with the odd fish of 10kg while snapper, pearl perch and other reef species remain viable targets.
