Weekly Report 2/9/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Sep 02, 2011 5:48 pm

Estuary: Spring has sprung and what a difference a week makes. Plenty of reports of flathead lurking around the weed beds with some fish mid-60cm. A great sign of what is to come for summer. 70mm black/gold Squidgy Fish or 3” Gulp Shrimp are the pick of the lures. Maria hardbody divers are also working well. Lures should be slowly retrieved this time of the year because the flathead are still slow and in winter mode. Blackfish are still plentiful along the breakwall on both Tuncurry and Forster sides. Bream are working the shoreline of Wallis Island on the run-in tide. The trick is plenty of berley and little or no weight at all on your line.
Rocks: Plenty of pigs, groper and large sea bream are filling the washes at the moment. Blackfish are still in good numbers down near Boomerang. These will start to migrate back into the estuary soon so get into them now whilst they are still on.
Offshore: The high pressure system along the east coast at the moment has made conditions very fishable over the last week. Plenty of good snapper are still easy to catch with Blackhead Reef and north as far as Crowdy Head the best areas. Leatherjackets are still thick and seem to follow boats to each and every spot. Rig for them with a good wire trace and bag out with a great feed.
Beach: Tailor & salmon are plentiful along most beaches, with the odd bream and dart amongst them. One report of a 15kg jewfish caught off Diamond Beach on a live slimy.
As spring is now with us we will be now open on Sundays from 9am to 3pm.
