Weekly Report 21/10/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:45 pm

There have been several good bags of flathead from many locations, from the breakwalls to Wauchope. Size has varied, with many around 1kg to 2kg and a few larger specimens thankfully returned to breed another day. Plenty of juveniles around 33cm. The pick spots have been the Maria and upstream of the Dennis Bridge, but anglers throwing blades or soft plastics in the lower reaches have also achieved excellent results.
Bream remain reasonable with the north wall and Limeburners producing. A few blackfish here and there one day, and gone the next. Lake Cathie remains well worth a visit, with plenty of quality whiting on offer after dark on live prawns or worms. In the Hastings, Blackmans Point or the flats around Pelican Island are both worth a look.
Conditions have not been ideal off the beaches but those who persisted have scored a few bream to around 800g from the northern end of Lighthouse, while Middle Rock at Cathie has continued to produce the odd school mulloway. Salmon remain pretty well everywhere, although generally not dominating everything else.
On the rocks, drummer are now a little slow although areas around Diamond Head and Point Plomer have been fishing well. Plomer has also been producing a few reasonable bream and odd blackfish, with those floating a bit of cabbage also encountering a few pigs. A few better than average tailor have been snared at first light at Lighthouse and Plomer.
Outside, snapper remain active although better results are now out a little deeper. Pearl perch remain first class, with a few bag limit (5) catches scored off Laurieton last weekend and plenty of good fish off Plomer. Those heading to Trag Rock or deeper continue to score a few kingfish.
