Weekly Report 15/3/13

On the beaches, despite limited access due to the recent erosion, some solid action has been on offer. Lighthouse has been producing a terrific run of well-conditioned bream, along with a few school mulloway from the southern end. North Beach has also held a few schoolies, along with a few nice flathead from between the 4WD access track and the breakwall. The beaches around Lake Cathie have also held school mulloway, some bumper whiting and occasional salmon. Good to see improved numbers of worms and pipis again.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers have been reasonable from the ledges north of Port Macquarie, with the better water clarity north of the Hasting River mouth no doubt the reason for the better action. A few nice bream and drummer around Lighthouse and Miners, while Point Perpendicular has been fishing really well for bream and blackfish. Longtail tuna have begun to show up more consistently around Hat Head, along with the occasional cobia and Spanish mackerel.
In the estuary, bream numbers remain excellent with plenty of fish to a kilo from the breakwalls and lower Limeburners. Flathead numbers remain solid, although the best of the action has been downstream of the Dennis Bridge. Plenty of mulloway are still in the lower reaches, with live bait, whole squid and lures all effective. Most fish have been just in the school class. Lake Cathie is also fishing exceptionally well, with some nice whiting and flathead between the bridge and the opening. Look for a sharp improvement further up the system as the cleaner water begins to push its way back up.
Offshore, at last conditions have begun to settle. With the current still raging from the north, best results have been achieved close in off Plomer, with some nice snapper and pearl perch taken. In Barries Bay, a few Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna have been on offer, while marlin numbers have been reasonable wider out. If you are keen on targeting billfish of any description, best bet would be to head to the shelf or try cruising the very outer edge of the dirty water line, which has produced a few nice fish over the past week.
