Weekly Report 24/5/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 24, 2013 3:41 pm

Before the latest bout of awful weather, calm seas saw several massive schools of mullet travelling close in up the coast with the supporting cast of dolphins and sharks feasting on them. Lighthouse was producing some nice bream and a steady stream of tailor, whilst North Beach fished well for both and a few late season whiting. Mulloway action remains excellent, particularly for school fish, but the upcoming full moon and plenty of mullet and tailor represents an excellent opportunity to target a much larger model.
Off the rocks, tailor remain excellent, with Lighthouse, Miners and Shelleys all giving up good feeds and Point Plomer has better quality fish. Night anglers report increasing numbers of bream and the odd mulloway. The terrific early start to the drummer season continues with the ledges around Plomer best.
In the estuary, bream numbers are improving and should be close to their best after the full moon. Flathead remain excellent, with quality fish between Wauchope and the breakwalls. Whitebait and lures have produced. Blackfish numbers are reasonable, although the bite and quality have been most inconsistent. Perhaps this batch of crook weather may prove the catalyst. While most mullet have exited the estuaries, I expect the lower reaches will be worth a look for mulloway.
Before the seas rose, some terrific snapper bagun to show up, with the reefs off Plomer, Lighthouse and Bonny Hills productive on plastics and live bait, although conventional bottom bouncing has also been working well. A few good pearl perch have been taken wide off Plomer with kings to around 10 kilos around Trag Rock.
