9/5/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Tue May 09, 2006 6:09 pm

Off the beaches, whitebait schools have been prolific and have attracted the predators. Tailor have been abundant although primarily choppers and hot on their heels have been significant numbers of mulloway. Lighthouse has been fishing exceptionally well, although North Beach and the beaches around Laurieton have also yielded good results. A few quality bream are about, although their winter run yet to commence. Whiting numbers are dwindling and murmurs from the south indicate the salmon are not too far off.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers are solid and bags have generally included a better class of fish than off the beaches. Bream numbers are reasonable and a few school mulloway have also been encountered, particularly from the ledges around Plomer. Drummer and blackfish are slowly improving. There are still a few longtail tuna and small kingfish to keep the LBG junkies amused, with Point Perpendicular and Hat Head well worth the trek.
In the estuary, flathead remain common and continue to enhance their reputation as a year round proposition. A few bream are about and following the full moon should improve. Blackfish remain a little disappointing although the breakwalls and the Maria River have yielded the odd reasonable bag. Still a few muddies around but blue swimmers remain disappointing.
Offshore, the general consensus is that things are a bit slow but those who have persisted have been scoring a few reasonable bags. Snapper are a viable option, with the reefs in 35m off Plomer fishing quite well. Wider out, good numbers of kingfish are also about but the throwbacks exceed the keepers. Leatherjackets remain a pest in places although the big winter specimens are yet to show up. Still a few mahi mahi around the FAD with the odd fish to around 10kg.
