Report 16/12/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Dec 15, 2016 11:12 am

In the estuaries, the Hastings continues to fish very well for both flathead and whiting. Flathead have been active in pretty well all parts from the break walls to Wauchope, while the best whiting action has been from Limeburners, the back channel and Blackmans Point. Lake Cathie however has been a little hit and miss on the whiting front, although look for an improvement now the full moon has passed and the prawns begin to travel. Just on this subject, whilst it’s unlikely prawn numbers will be as significant as when the system is shut, the next week or two are prime, and no doubt there will be plenty of participation from those with both drag and scoop nets seeking a feed for Xmas. Also on the crustacean theme, both blue swimmer and mud crab numbers have picked in the Hastings, so deploying a few traps and witches hats could also add to your seafood supplies over Xmas.

On the beaches, whiting numbers are solid, with Lighthouse in particular fishing well on the run up tide. In with the whiting are a few nice bream, with worms and pipis accounting for the better catches. Those fishing the evening tides are still finding a few school mulloway, with both Lighthouse and North beach worth a look.

Off the rocks, results remain subdued as is usual for this time of year. Best reports are from around Point Perpendicular which has produced a few nice mulloway of both baits and lures. The Lighthouse as always is worth a look for tailor at first light.

Offshore, while conditions have not been overly favourable, those who have ventured wide have been doing well on marlin, while the FAD has held some terrific mahi mahi. Closer in snapper have been in reasonable numbers, with both bait and lure tactics sharing equal success.
