18/8/06 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Aug 18, 2006 3:14 pm

Offshore: A week of great weather has seen several boats venture wide, one for a drop on some bar cod and the other some cubing for yellowfin. Both came home empty-handed. In closer there have been unusually large numbers of bonito for this time of year but the curse of the leatherjackets remains strong with everybody fishing outside at some stage losing gear to these blighters. Those that get past the jackets have enjoyed some nice captures of reds and pearlies.
Beaches: You may as well have gone to the beach to work on your tan. Even the salmon seem to have gone quiet.
Rocks: A few guys down south reported a couple of mulloway off the rock. Drummer, and what bream that are around, have provided plenty of action. The base of Cape Hawke is still holding some quality blackfish.
Estuary: The last few mornings have seen plenty of tailor around the base of the bridge. Water temps outside and in the lake are above average for this time of year and therefore flathead are active and worth targeting. Some stud bream were caught last weekend on unweighted Gulp 2” Minnow Grubs in pumpkinseed. These fish were yet to spawn which also seems unusual for this time of the year. Seamo tried to catch a bass last weekend but seems to have lost the knack, so instead he's gone to the Top End for a week’s R and R.
