Weekly Report 8/2/08

Offshore: A small band of cooler water has taken up position along the coast. This only extends out a kilometre or two and hasn't affected the mahi mahi etc, which remain in big numbers, although trying to get past the rats is a problem. Likewise, small kingfish are everywhere, as are bonito. Black and striped marlin were encountered over the past week. The best of the reef fishing was well to our north around Dennis Shoal.
Beaches: Several locals have commented about the number of quality gutters along Tuncurry Beach. Some tailor and bream have been taken in those areas. The lack of mulloway off the breakwalls has seen a little more effort going into finding these fish, again along Tuncurry Beach. Whiting and dart are still to be found on most beaches.
Rocks: I've received a second-hand report of cobia being taken by LBG anglers but details are sketchy. Rat kings are common and bait generally hasn't been a problem to catch on site.
Estuary: The run out tide continues to draw dirty water out of the rivers and this is concentrating the fish in the lower parts of the system. Flathead have been in big numbers just up from the bridge. If you're after bream, work the transition between the dirty and cleaner run-in tide water as it moves up the lake. Big whiting have been taken after dark around the bridge on the Tuncurry side, but live prawns, worms or nippers are a must.
