Weekly Report 5/9/08

Offshore: What a lousy winter we've had! Poor weather has been a feature and it's not finished yet. Last Monday and Tuesday were actually very calm and warm and a few locals took advantage to give their boats a run. Almost everyone that got out came across plenty of snapper, morwong and the occasional pearly. Jackets continue to be encountered by those drifting for flathead. I even saw a small bar cod caught in relatively shallow water. Big kingfish have been reported in the Seal Rocks area, with yellowfin tuna in big numbers out on the canyons.
Beaches: Last Saturday morning saw a good run of big tailor at Jannies Corner. For a change, those using metal lures out-fished those using pillies. Overall, the beach fishing has been quiet.
Rock: The local drummer experts reported a few big sessions over the last week but were reluctant to say exactly where they were. Best guess is that they were south of town.
Estuary: We've had 60mm+ of rain in the last day and a half with more to come. The lake, which was again fishing well for bream, blackfish and some early season flathead, will become dirty and cold over the next few days. It's anybody’s guess what the outcome will be. Maybe the mulloway will fire up and be worth a go from the breakwall.
