Weekly Report 17 Jan 09

Offshore - Very little has changed from last weeks report. The water in close has cooled and has in places become quite dirty. Warm blue water continues to push down the coast out wider and with it are some excellent game fish. Most charter boats are catching enough Snapper and other reef species to keep the crews happy. Several people have had some fun with Snapper on plastics in close off Blackhead. Mahi Mahi remain small.

Beaches - Up until yesterday I'd have said that the beach fishing was the same as it has been for weeks.............poor............ however, several visitors to town have reported some cracker Whiting are being caught off Tuncurry Beach, particularly towards the northern end.

Rocks - Little, if anything, of note to pass on.

Estuary - The cooler water just off the coast has reduced the water temperature in the lower parts of the lake. Some believe this has impacted upon the Flathead activity, however the few locals who are fishing tell me that they are catching and releasing fish over 70cm every day. Whiting remain an easy target when using fresh beach worms with the interest in poppers dropping off a bit this past week. Crabbing remains excellent.
Chasing Bream on lures further up the rivers has been productive, particularly on the hot days when the Cicada's are making plenty of noise.
Some Mulloway have been caught from the breakwalls, but the number of people fishing has made life a little difficult. Lots of Garfish and Mullet are being reported throughout the system.
