Weekly Report 24 Jan 09

Offshore - Another week gone with little improvement to be seen in the offshore fishing. It's rare for me to rave about offshore Flathead drifting, however at the moment it's the most productive form of fishing going on out there. Yes, you'll catch a few Snapper ( squire ) on the reefs and small Mahi Mahi at the FAD, but lets work on the basis that the best is yet to come. The water at the shelf looks good for those after game fish.

Beaches - The best Tailor reports have come from well to our north where you'll end up closer to Port Macquarie than Forster/Tuncurry. Small Whiting and Bream and the occasional Dart are all that's being reported from local beaches.

Estuary - Prawns are running at night and accordingly the best of the fishing has been at that time. Schools of small bait fish are holding in and around The Step on which Pike are predating. Under these schools are to be found some quality Bream. Five inch Gulp Jerk Shads and blades have accounted for the best of the Bream. Shallow bays are producing Whiting on poppers on the rising and full tide. Huge Whiting are being caught under the bridge after dark on live prawns or nippers. Fishing the breakwall after dark using a slab or whole Mullet will ensure an encounter with one of the many Bronze Whalers that are around. Flathead are everywhere. Don't forget your crab pots.
