23/12/05 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:25 am

Offshore: Fishing continues to improve with black, blue and striped marlin all raised over the last week. In closer the FAD is now holding mahi mahi, as are traps around Five Mile. Bonito and kingfish are common around The Pinnacle and Latitude Rock. Charter boats are reporting the reefs are fishing well for snapper.
Beaches: Reports a little more positive than in recent weeks. Whiting numbers are on the increase, as are the tailor. There are still some salmon around, particularly on the southern end of Tuncurry Beach.
Rocks: Once again those with good eyes and the knowledge of where to look tell me there are plenty of mulloway along the coastline. Tailor can be spun up around most headlands with the tides from Boxing Day on looking good for this type of fishing. Lots of reports of small sharks cruising in close.
Estuary: Another prawn dark is about to start and as always the fishing after dark will be at its best. Some mulloway have been reported but generally the locals go to ground over the next month and stay out of the way of the visitors. Quality flathead are being caught every day, as are whiting. Go for a run up the rivers if you are visiting and want a bit of water for yourself. Take the crab traps if you are venturing out on the lake.
