Weekly Report 30/12/05

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 30, 2005 9:28 am

Offshore: A very strong current from the north continues to bring warm blue water past our front door. In close the bonito are in big numbers at Snapper Rock. This time last season cobia and small black marlin were caught among the bonito at the same spot. Mahi mahi are still a bit hit and miss with several boats catching fish to 8kg at the FAD and others telling me they can't find a fish! Most reefs are holding pan-size snapper and assorted reef rubbish.
Beaches: Better tides over the last few days have produced the best beach fishing for ages. Small tailor are now common along with some big sand whiting. What has been scarce are beach worms for bait.
Rocks: Small tailor as previously mentioned. No LBG action yet.
Estuary: Whiting, flathead, bream and a thousand small craft are all looking for room on Wallis Lake. The fishing has been great but be prepared to go a little further than most and you'll have an area all to yourself. Hats off to all the people who kicked up a stink about the idiot who kept two big flathead over 70cm and bragged about it! More than one person reported this gorilla to the local authorities who have confirmed to me that they will be paying him a visit.
