Weekly Report 10/7/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jul 10, 2009 8:57 am

The wet and windy winter continues with sou'-easterly winds making offshore fishing very uncomfortable. Most reports have been received from local trap and line professional fishermen who have experienced another unseasonable run of bonito on the inshore reefs. Tailor are still in big numbers at Latitude Rock, the Graveyard, the Barge and the Ballast Heap.
Several quality snapper came from relatively shallow water wide of Blackhead last weekend. Most of these fell to soft plastics. The trag fishing of an evening has been excellent although the weather has not.
Rock fishing is producing an big run of large blackfish. Jannies Corner, Booti Booti and Pacific Palms are all holding fish. The one thing that has been a bit quiet is the reports of drummer. I'm not sure if this is because fewer people are having a go.
If you fish the beaches with fresh worms you could catch anything from a dart, a whiting to a small mulloway. Seven Mile Beach produced some great tailor last weekend but you had to find the holes that they were feeding in. Salmon numbers are increasing.
A local diver tells me that the main channel into the lake is holding large schools of mulloway with the ends of the breakwalls loaded with big bream.
