Weekly Report 18/12/09

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Dec 18, 2009 5:08 pm

Thanks to everyone who has warmly welcomed me and my family to ‘paradise’ in our first week as the new proprietors of Great Lakes Tackle. After a break of six years from the industry it was time to come back.
Offshore: Fishing has improved with clean, warm water moving down the coast. Every day the water has crept up to around 23° around the FAD – this will start to produce good mahi mahi which traditionally are caught around Christmas. As the southerlies and nor’-easters have been in force this week, not many of the boy’s have ventured out too wide, so not many reports have come in. A few small kings have been caught down off Latitude Rock early in the week.
Estuary: As early as last Monday Chris from Forster Beach Caravan Park landed a beautiful 56cm giant herring on a surface popper while chasing whiting in the lake. Normally a fish from the tropical north, they are seen at times in waterways as far south as Port Hacking. Whiting are plentiful at the moment with plenty of good catches this week on surface poppers and bait. Chopper tailor are brewing thick in the lake, giving all the baitfish a move-along. A few reports of good mulloway caught off the harbour breakwall mainly on Tsunami Pro 9” soft plastics on the run-out tide. Of course, flathead are thick and are jumping on soft plastics and bait virtually every cast or drift. One customer finished his day off on Wednesday with a bag limit after an enjoyable 2½ hours drifting with plastics in the lake.
Rock/beach: A few divers have reported that along the coast the rocks have plenty of fish, but no reports from anyone taking advantage of this situation. On the beach a few legal whiting have been landed along with the occasional dart.
For those interested in catching whiting we have a good stock of high quality local preserved beach worms with fresh live worms available from Boxing Day – be quick as these wriggle out the door fast.
