Weekly Report 24/12/09

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Dec 24, 2009 11:52 am

Estuary: Wallis Lake and the harbour inlets are still fishing well with a lot of good-sized flathead being caught from the shore and from boats. Most have been caught on soft plastics although reports have been received of 60cm-plus fish caught on whitebait on the drift. Whiting are still plentiful with fish of 28-33cm being caught in the shallows on poppers. The sand flats near the bridge are fishing well on the rising tide. Further up the river and at the top of the lake has produced good bream, especially on the hot days when the cicadas are singing in the trees.
Good-sized mulloway have again been caught from the breakwall on the run-out tide using large soft plastics. Small kings are also being landed from the breakwall. Smiths Lake has delivered one 12-year-old customer a good bag of flathead with two fish at 43cm.
Rocks: Nothing to report.
Offshore: Water in close has chilled off to or below 20° with snapper being caught arriving on board quite cool. The by-catch of pearl perch has made the snapper look average and if anyone is lucky to bring home one, be prepared to dine on one of the state’s most exceptional tasting fish.
Remember that from Boxing Day we will have good stocks of live beach worms, which the whiting are feasting on.
Great Lakes Tackle will open every day during the holiday season except Christmas Day.
Happy Christmas to all anglers,
