Weekly Reports 15/1/10

Estuary: Recently a customer came into our store and was flabbergasted that she had, after 20 years, caught a flounder again. Spending one afternoon fishing Smiths Lake rewarded her with four good-sized 26cm-plus flounder caught on half Hawkesbury prawns. She also caught two 42cm flathead and three legal whiting – not a bad afternoon’s fishing! The main lake is still producing good stocks of flathead taking a variety of baits or hard body stick lures plus soft plastics. Whiting are still around with most being caught on poppers or beachworms.
The Wallamba River is still producing nice bream. Although you need to work hard to lure them out, the end results are pleasing. The Hawk Chunk lures or the Kokoda Bugger Chug are choice of the anglers.
Several mulloway have been taken from the Tuncurry Breakwall each day and at night, mainly on live pike. Fish of 15kg to 20kg have been caught.
Rocks: Only one report from a rock fisherman this week. The rock ledge in Janies Corner has produced some nice bream on striped tuna strips.
Offshore: Some very healthy reports with the water temperature out wide up to 25.5° near the FAD. A regular customer during the week ventured out from Crowdy Bay and landed a mixed bag of snapper to 4kg with some good bonito and kings aplenty. Although only small, a lot of mahi mahi were sighted near the FAD with reports of the schools thick and fighting to take the lure.
Beach: Good reports this week from holidaymakers fishing the main Tuncurry beach. Good flathead and bream are being landed with good quantities of dart by-catch using beachworms.
