Weekly Report 12/3/10

Estuary: Many locals have bagged out in the Lake on bream and flathead. The best report was from regular angler Neville Harris, who fished the Wallamba and Coolongolook rivers during the week and landed good flathead 55cm–60cm with the best fish measuring 1.1m – she was released to continue to breed for the future. A group of regular Sydney visitors spent last weekend fishing the lake on the last of the run-out tides and also caught their limit of flatties each day drifting with whitebait.
The bream seem to have started to swap places with the flathead and have moved down the river into the lake system. Normally you would expect this to happen later in the month or in April but anglers are happy to make the most of the fish while they last. The pylons around the bridge and the oyster leases proved to be the best spots this week. We received a photo 8 bream all around 800g caught on the last of the run-out tide.
The boys from Smiths Lake FC have reported some good catches from Smiths, mainly flathead and a few very good whiting.
Mud crabs have been plentiful in the Wallamba River and up in Beaky Bay.
Rocks: I visited Janies Corner on Sunday for a snoop around to see what was biting and can report that a few bream and drummer were in anglers’ bags. The water was choppy, white and rough and this was producing the best fish.
Offshore: Reports of good tag and release of striped and black marlin down off Nelson Bay along with a sprinkling of mako sharks. One boat spent over two hours fighting one mako.
Bar cod up to 12kg have been landed off Old Bar in about 80m along with good snapper and pearl perch.
Beach: Many customers are leaving the store with Mustad 4202 3/0 hooks and bags of pilchards so I suspect that tailor are still running.
