Weekly Report 9/4/10

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Apr 09, 2010 1:58 pm

Estuary: With the holidaymakers in town reports have been plentiful with many good catches. Bream and blackfish seem to have arrived with nice bream around 30cm common. The blackfish have been providing bag limits in the early mornings around the breakwall and near the leases at The Paddock. Point Road Reserve is fishing well with some good keeper flathead on mullet fillets.
With the dark on at the moment and the tide on the run out early in the evening, prawns are running. Good reports of blue swimmer crabs and still a few mud crabs around in the Wallamba River.
Rocks: Early last weekend a regular customer fished the rocks at the northern end of One Mile Beach for some good sized bream and a few small soapie jews. Still a few kings being landed at Bennetts Head and Seagull Point. Metal lures are working best. Land-based game season is starting with reports of longtail tuna around Charlottes and Flat Rock. Still plenty of bonito and a few pearl perch to those lucky few.
Offshore: Plenty of garfish on the surface around Old Bar with good-sized longtails chasing them. A Newcastle regular landed 6 nice reds off Old Bar on Tuesday on 7” soft plastics. Mahi mahi out wide about 17km offshore on the surface chasing lures. Flatties on the gravel beds. Smiths Lakes FC boys reported good-sized reds up to 4kg down off Seal Rocks on Gulp 7” soft plastics.
Beach: Still a good smattering of tailor on Seven and Nine Mile beaches. Northern end of Boomerang Beach has produced good catches of bream up to around 700g on mullet strips or large prawns.
