Weekly Report 5/11/10

Estuary: The jewfish have started to return to the breakwall, with a couple of good reports this week. Although only small (around 12lb) it is a positive sign for the next few months. The 9” Panther Martin lures have landed a few with the others caught on live bait. Under the bridge on the Tuncurry side there have been some decent flathead, particularly on the run-out tide. Further up the lake the whiting have been active between Hells Gate and The Step – one morning 27 boats were counted fishing that area. Be warned, NSW Maritime has been active and those caught anchored in the channel will be busted. Flathead have been everywhere. Don't go too far up the rivers if you are targeting bream on lures – the racks are still firing. Blackfish are still active and can be caught lurking around the front of the racks plus along the weed beds.
Rock: Some great pigs have been caught down near Seal Rocks, with bream a little scarce this week. Reports from the regulars that a few small groper are being caught on small crabs.
Offshore: A very poor week of weather has meant few boats went to sea. The days seem to improve only to go pear-shaped as you get the boat ready! Those who did go reported trag and small snapper plentiful down south. NSW Fisheries were in the store last week and reminded that Marine parks will be targeted over the next few months – keep clear. They also advise that the FAD has been returned for summer – the new co ordinates are 32° 13.251S 152 ° 40.680E.
Beach: Tuncurry Beach has provided some excellent tailor but salmon are still a nuisance. The inclement weather has made it difficult to fish the beaches over the last week.
