Weekly Report 12/11/10

Estuary: Other than the weather not knowing what it is doing, another great week of fishing within the bounds of the Wallis Lake and adjoining rivers. Trumpeter whiting are in big numbers throughout the lake with the best spot around Hells Gate and under The Wires. A few anglers have also had success catching some nice size sand whiting. I have had a few people ask me over the last week how to tell the difference between the two. The easiest way is to compare the dorsal fin. The trumpeter has a dorsal fin that is convex while the sand has a concave dorsal. Identification is important as these are subject to different size limits.
Jewfish have been active along the wall this week with a few good fish being caught on live pike. Good-sized flathead have been caught in numbers near the Forster Marina on black/gold Squidgy Fish. The Breckenridge Channel near Pipers Lane has fired well for land-based anglers.
Still a few good luderick around the racks and the back of Tern Island with fish up to 44cm.
Rocks: Last Sunday saw regular Heath Deacoe and mates fish the rocks for outstanding results. Big pigs around 4kg were common with one weighing in at 4.5kg. The boys also landed some nice groper on large black crabs.
Offshore: A much better week with a few fishers heading south for trag and snapper along with 60cm flatties on the gravel.
Beach: Tailor have started to run again this week along Nine Mile up near the tip track. A few bream and whiting amongst them, plus large to extra large salmon common.
