Weekly Report 17/12/10

Estuary: Perfect! Wallis Lake is simply on fire with great catches. Whiting are here en masse, with fish up to 458g caught last weekend in deep holes at many spots around the lake. One regular customer from Gloucester fished last Saturday afternoon with his son to land 103 whiting with 60 legal fish, all on Sammy 65 Lures. He kept 12 fish for his family of five and guests. The trick is to work your lure hard and fast and do not stop. Another customer was successful on the flats adjacent to the Sailing Club using a Sugapen and a Stiffy Popper colour FRV wading in knee-deep water for two hours. Fast retrieve and do not stop – the fun is watching the whiting fight over the popper.
The bridge on the Tuncurry side is fishing exceptionally well for those chasing flathead from shore. Fish the last wharf next to the bridge with a 1/8oz jighead and either a killer tomato or black/gold Squidgy Fish for best results. Good reports from the back of Tuncurry Caravan Park in Chapmans Rd fishing baits with a small sinker for bream and plate flathead.
Rock: Not much to report other than one second-hand report of some bream and medium size tailor off Janies Corner.
Offshore: Chris from Forster Beach Caravan Park fished the FAD last week and reported a mass of small kingfish right under it. He was successful using slices and 7” Gulp soft plastics. Simon & Jesse Wrigley fished in close last Sunday and came home with some large pearl perch, snapper and large flathead. They report that the small mako sharks were on the bite and very active, taking their catch on the surface right beside the boat. The water temp is only about 18° so mahi mahi have stayed away, but with a nice hot current travelling south along the coast from as far up as Tweed should start to produce good results.
Still plenty of plate-size reds down south around Seal Rocks.
Beach: Absolutely no reports this week.
Over the Christmas Period we will be open 7 days a week from 7.30am til late.
