Weekly Report 23/12/10

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:45 pm

Estuary: Another great week in Wallis Lake and adjoining rivers. Good reports of flathead up to 65cm in the rivers – Wallamba River up around the Cattle Crossing at Failford and Cooloonglook are all fishing well. Still good reports of whiting, trumpeter and sand are grabbing poppers around the bridge plus out the back of Tonys Island. If fishing the bridge and lower lakes I suggest early morning or just on dark as this area will be very busy from Boxing Day onwards, with holidaymakers cruising around on all sorts of watercraft. Best lure at the moment for flathead seems to be the DOA Shrimp – a great plastic with a central belly weight allowing it to glide down onto the weed beds and sand flats. Try the back of Godwin Island on the run-out tide adjacent to Barclays Oysters for the best results. Still some good catches of luderick on the Tuncurry Wall and the back of Tern Island.
Rock: Spots near McBrides and Latitude have fished well with some outstanding bonito being spun up on chrome ½ x ¼ slices. A few reports of small kingfish along the Tanks and near Bennetts Head.
Offshore: Jesse Wrigley fished Blackhead Reef in the shallows last week and came home with some nice snapper with the best just over 5kg. A mixed bag of flathead and pearl perch accompanied him home. A warm current is still trying to push its way down the coast with water just north up around 23°. Once this makes it way down the fishing will improve dramatically and hopefully bring mahi mahi. In close The Barge and The Ballast continue to produce good results with flathead and snapper. Normal reef rubbish will of course be part and parcel of a day’s fishing.
Beach: Pleasant mornings before the nor-easter picks up have produced nice whiting and bream down off Elizabeth Beach. Tuncurry Beach has had a few large mulloway cruising the gutters along with a mass of shovelnose sharks.
Over the Christmas period we will be open 7 days a week from 7.30am til late.
