Weekly Report 14/1/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 14, 2011 12:25 pm

Estuary: The overcast days have certainly helped the fishing with great catches of whiting and flathead. Whiting have been jumping all over Sugapen lures while the flathead have been picking Squidgy 70mm Fish and Hawkesbury prawns. Use the prawns unweighted or if in some run, a small sinker to get the bait down. Good reports of garfish down at The Step. A good supply of bream with one report of nine fish weighing a total of 9kg in a 2-hour session caught among the racks off Bandicoot Island. Tailor have been smashing Raider lures down off The Step.
Still plenty of blue swimmer crabs around plus nice mud crabs up near the back of Tuncurry Lakes Caravan Park and further west towards Darawank.
Rocks: Again, no reports other than a few nice bream off Janies Corner. The strong nor’-easters have keep rockhoppers indoors, I presume.
Offshore: The winds have kept most boats inside with charter operators tied up for the last 5 days. Those that did head out fished hard but most got good mixed bags. Snapper up to 4kg, flathead and the normal reef rubbish has filled most bags. One report of some mack tuna off Latitude Rock chasing large schools of slimy mackerel. Plenty of bait being caught in close along the Tanks.
Beach: Bream, dart and whiting along with the occasional tailor along most beaches. With the full Moon due on January 20, those chasing tailor should do well early morning and evening with the run-up tides. Ensure that your metal slice lures are well stocked! Shovelnose sharks are still in plague proportions but the tails make nice eating.
