Weekly Report 21/1/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Jan 21, 2011 2:45 pm

Estuary: Prawns will start to run soon (from Jan 27) and the best of the fishing will be around that time. Schools of chopper tailor have been sighted around The Step. Plenty of baitfish around and some quality bream have been chasing them. Gulp 2” Shrimps and blade lures have been working the best on the bream. Whiting on poppers on the flats have been the pick this week with many good reports of fish around 30cm. Huge whiting are being caught under the bridge after dark on live prawns or nippers. Flathead are still everywhere and it seems they will jump on any lure or eat any bait. Blue swimmers are still plentiful so remember those pots.
Rock: Salmon have been on the bite on pilchards and metal slice lures off Janies Corner.
Offshore: The northern areas of reef have provided anglers with great catches of snapper ranging from around 1.5kg to the more popular 3.5kg-4kg. A few reports of fish around 7kg as well. Small mahi mahi are massing around the FAD. A few trag have been caught after dark down Seal Rocks way.
Beach: Tailor reports are scarce with the beaches working the best at the moment for those fishing a little lighter chasing bream and whiting. Small dart on Seven Mile, along with a few small school jew, but that’s about all from the local beaches.
