Weekly Report 18/2/11

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 18, 2011 1:39 pm

Estuary: Not a bad week at all. Most anglers have reported good bag limits on most species in the lake. The abundance of baitfish has certainly spurred on bream, tailor and mulloway. The breakwall has fired well with good numbers of mulloway around 15lb. A few reports of kingfish also cruising along the breakwall towards the entrance chasing large schools of mullet. Large female flathead have been caught along the wall close to the bridge on the Tuncurry side, with good bags of the smaller males up around mid-40cm in the Breckenridge Channel and along the back of Tern Island. A few blackfish have started to appear but not in big numbers. Wang Wauk and Wallingat rivers have produced some nice bream on small hardbody lures and surface poppers. Crabs are still on with one angler this week landing a lobster in his pot in the lake.
Rocks: A good run of kings along the tanks right up to Bennetts Head. One second-hand report of a longtail caught off Charlottes Head.
Offshore: Good-sized mahi mahi out at the FAD. One customer reported that he landed a bull over 1.3m. Most fish at the FAD have been juveniles around 3kg . Plenty of bonito along the shoreline in close from Forster right down to Seal Rocks. Trag are in numbers with early morning before sunrise the pick time. Reds have been on the chew up north from Blackhead to Crowdy. Most fish are squire with the bump just starting to form.
Beach: Tailor and salmon have been thick along the Tuncurry Beach. Down south, Elizabeth and Boomerang have fished well with good reports of bream and quality whiting. Shovelnose sharks still popular.
